I got a chance to shoot a bit more on Mare Island last night. The Mare Island Nocturnes held an Alumni night and there were perhaps 30 photographers out and about in the night.

If you look in the lower right, you can see a tripod and a ghosted image of one of those photogs.

This is a photo I took in November of 2006 of El Capitan by moonlight. It’s a test image to see if I can post date a post and get it to show up on time.

Since last night was the full moon, I decided to try and use moonlight to photograph the canyon. An added bonus was the over flight of the International Space Station.

Update: There’s a second faint light streak to the right of the ISS. I didn’t know what it was until I read this:

There is an elusive moment (for me) that I’ve seen but never successfully photographed where the moon is just touching the City at Sunrise. This isn’t it, but the attempt was fun, quiet and beautiful.

Last night’s full moon came up just over the north peak of Mt. Diablo. From my vantage, the Diablo Valley and Walnut Creek were spread underneath in a wash of lights.

Tonight’s full Moon has a special name–the Worm Moon. It signals the coming of northern spring, a thawing of the soil, and the first stirrings of earthworms in long-dormant gardens. January’s full moon is the biggest of the year just as December’s was for 2008. Since the moon travels in an eliptical orbit there are times (like this month) when the full moon coincides with perigee, or closest approach and therefore appears larger, 30% in this case.
