Slide Copier

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi + 18-200mm, 1/30 @ f/6.3

I find that it’s easier and more useful to copy slides using my camera than it is to scan them. This is the setup I use. I have a 100mm f2.8 macro lens with a slide copy attachment. The tricky part was finding a way to extend the copier to get the right sized image. I used several old 52mm filters with the glass knocked out.

I start with the camera set to 1/60 @ f8, ISO 100. Then, I adjust the strength of the flash until I get a good looking histogram. With the 5D mkII, I end up with a scan that’s fairly large but more importantly to me, in a RAW file. It gives me a lot more latitude to work with the image.
