When I was in the Grand Canyon, I had the chance to try a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS zoom. It was a bad idea. Focus is instant and sharp? Oh my, yes. Now I have to have one. Currently OOS at Adorama and B&H. Rumor sez the new one debuts in September. Maybe some used ones will show up….

Yeah, it’s touristy and been done a thousand times. Still, I like it.

Long after most of the tourists had departed from shooting the sunset, the light got really diffuse and beautiful. This was my favorite shot after sunset.

I participated in Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk today. Our walk was from Chrissy Field to the Marina District in San Francisco. This shot was taken as fog was beginning to clear from the marina near the St. Francis Yacht Club.

I participated in Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk today. Our walk was from Chrissy Field to the Marina District in San Francisco. I stumbled upon the most vibrant Bougainvillea I’ve ever seen on the front of a very classy home.

Grand Canyon by moonlight / ISS flyover

Since last night was the full moon, I decided to try and use moonlight to photograph the canyon. An added bonus was the over flight of the International Space Station.

Update: There’s a second faint light streak to the right of the ISS. I didn’t know what it was until I read this:

Space Weather News for July 8, 2009

WHAT’S FOLLOWING THE ISS? Sky watchers are reporting a “mysterious satellite” following the International Space Station (ISS). It trails the ISS by about one minute, relatively faint, but definitely there. Mystery solved: The follower is Progress 33, a Russian supply ship. On July 12th, it will come within meters of the space station to test a new automated docking system. Check the Simple Satellite Tracker for flyby times and get two spaceships for the price of one: http://spaceweather.com/flybys

I participated in a Canon event at the Grand Canyon today. It was a chance for non-DSLR users to try them out for free. Since I already have one, I took the chance to sample one of Canon’s best lenses, the 70-200mm f2.8 IS. On reflection, it may have been a very expensive ‘free’ seminar. It’s easily the fastest focussing lens I’ve ever used. Shooting mid-day is always hard but details can be interesting at the right angle.

We visited the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona. It is a truly astounding piece of architecture looking perfectly correct in 2009 despite the fact that it was designed & built in the early 50’s. I have a number of straightforward shots but as I was waiting for Brigitte to return from the Gift Shop, I started shooting up the outside wall just inside the shadow using a small (f22) aperture to get the star effect from the sun.
