Salal Trail stream uploaded by admin.

We discovered a delightful trail that leads away from the shore along a stream and eventually to small but beautiful waterfall. Along the way, this bush was in bloom above the stream.

Fiddleneck uploaded by admin.

This is a small, fairly common wildflower here in the Bay Area of Northern California. This is possibly the Bent-Flowered Fiddleneck (Amsinckia lunaris).

Early in the morning, the fog condenses on everything. Newly emerging Lupines provide a nice pattern for all that moisture.

Trillium uploaded by admin.

We saw a lot of Trillium in the coastal redwood forests that are part of Sea Ranch. I find its symmetry to be unusual in nature. That may be why it is attractive to me.

Redwood Orchid uploaded by admin.

This small flower (5″), sometimes called Calypso Orchid or Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa), was growing right next to the roadway I was walking on near the house we stay in when we visit Sea Ranch. All by itself, it’s easily missed but a real treat if you find one.

Nectarine Blossoms uploaded by admin.

A nectarine tree in my neighbor’s yard overhangs my fence. I was trying to capture the essence of the blooms. I didn’t archive that goal but I did see this and liked what I saw.

There was something about the colors and shapes that drew me to this. What that something was, I have no idea. I just liked it.

Purple uploaded by admin.

Around here (Northern California) there is a vine that seems to grow everywhere and with it a profusion of tiny (.25″) purple flowers. I’ve photographed it often and until now, haven’t been able to capture how beautiful it is. I’m happy with this shot but that won’t stop me from trying again….

SR Mushroom uploaded by admin.

As Brigitte and I traipsed trails at Sea Ranch, we spied a wide variety of mushrooms. There were lots of different colors but this yellowish one stood out both for color and form. I like the way the light poured through it.

India, a trip postponed

We were all set to get on a plane bound for India via Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago. It was our 3rd attempt. The 1st was on September 15th, 2001. The 2nd was last fall when an unexpected reloaction caused us to cancel. This time, Brigitte was sick with a flu-like illness. She gritted her teeth and was determined to make it regardless. 3 days before we were to leave, I started to come down with something similar. Yes, since you asked, both of us got flu shots this year. It came down to Sunday, 24 hours before the flight, our deadline for canceling the plane reservations without losing everything.

I eventually decided that I was too sick to fly and possibly endure being sick across 2 11 hour flights and 2 continents. At the time, it felt like a very tough decision since so much planning and effort had gone into the project. In retrospect however, it turned out to be the right choice. I got more sick in the following days and Brigitte didn’t exactly get better either. Imagine my surprise when a couple hours after canceling the flights I came across this article on CNN. Scary stuff.

Will we try again? Perhaps. I’ll let you know.
